Traditional use and composition
Tabernanthe iboga is a forest shrub of the Apocynaceae family, native to Central Africa (Gabon, Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo). Its root bark has a central place in Bwiti, a religious tradition of Gabon. According to a 2025 anthropological study, traditional Bwiti is found among at least twenty ethnic groups of the country; the best studied is the Bwete of the Mitsogho, who are generally considered its founders.
Among the Fang, Bwiti took a form syncretic with Christianity, described by the anthropologist James Fernandez in 1982. Collective ceremonies are held mostly at night, accompanied by the eight-stringed ngombi harp, drums and dancing (Samorini 2025).
| Known compounds | Iboga-type monoterpenoid indole alkaloids: ibogaine, ibogamine and voacangine in the root bark (Iyer et al. 2021). |

The plant and its name
The name Tabernanthe iboga Baill. was published in 1888. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the Apocynaceae, the dogbane family, and lists Tabernanthe bocca Stapf, Tabernanthe mannii Stapf and Tabernanthe pubescens Pichon among its synonyms. Plant name databases record the English names iboga, eboka and ibogo, and the French names iboga, éboga and bois amer.
Native range
The checklist gives the native range of the species as Cameroon, Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola and Cabinda. Cameroon, the country printed on this pouch, lies within that range.
Iboga in another form
The same species is also listed as iboga from Gabon, finely powdered root, likewise in 5 g, 25 g and 100 g packs.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
