Reported effects and traditional use

Ceiba pentandra, the kapok or samaúma, is a large tree of the mallow family (Malvaceae), found in tropical America and West Africa. A 2022 study calls it a ‘spiritual keystone species’ of the Neotropics: from the Caribbean to the Argentine Chaco, Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples describe it as a world axis, a guide of souls and the shelter of major forest spirits.

The tree has many names depending on the region: lupuna, samauma, mapou, fromager or kapok. In Africa it is also used in traditional medicine, according to a 2025 study.

Known compoundsSesquiterpene alkaloids (pentandralactams) and other compounds isolated from the stem bark (Ngoc et al. 2026); composition still poorly characterised.
Traditional useA sacred tree, world axis and shelter of forest spirits among Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples of the Neotropics (Tareau et al. 2022); also used in African traditional medicine.
State of researchMostly laboratory studies on extracts and isolated compounds. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

A widespread tropical species

Linnaeus named the species, and Gaertner placed it in Ceiba in 1791. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants records a native range that runs from Mexico and the Caribbean through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern, north-eastern and west-central Brazil. The tree is also recorded as introduced in tropical Africa and Asia. Samaúma and sumaúma are the Portuguese names listed by the Flora e Funga do Brasil; French uses kapokier or fromager, German Kapokbaum.

Pouch and photos

The cover photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label reading Samauma, Ceiba pentandra and Powdered, with a Made in Brazil seal and an empty net-weight field, beside a wide terracotta bowl of the powder. The second photo shows the bowl on its own.

Another samaúma item

The same tree also supplies the samauma bark ash from Brazil, a different material made by burning the bark.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
