This product is plant material of Erythrina mulungu, packed under the Herborist label. The label names the plant as "Mulungu" and "Erythrina mulungu" and tags the contents "[herb]"; it names neither a plant part nor a country of origin. Mycotrop stocks it in three sizes: 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg. All three bags hold the same material, so you only choose the quantity.

Traditional use and composition

Erythrina mulungu is a tree of the legume family (Fabaceae) native to South America (south-eastern and west-central Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, according to Kew), called mulungu or coral tree for its red flowers. In Brazilian traditional medicine, preparations of its bark or leaves are used (Setti-Perdigão et al. 2013).

Alkaloids of the Erythrina type, such as erythravine, 11-hydroxyerythravine and 11-hydroxyerysotrine, have been isolated from the species. In the laboratory they inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and extracts have altered the behaviour of animals.

Known compoundsAlkaloids of the Erythrina type: erythravine, 11-hydroxyerythravine and 11-hydroxyerysotrine (Setti-Perdigão et al. 2013).

The species and its range

The name Erythrina mulungu was published in 1859 in Martius’s Flora Brasiliensis, by Bentham from a name by Martius. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP), compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it as a species of the legume family. It gives the native range as north-eastern and north-western Argentina, Bolivia, south-eastern and west-central Brazil, and Paraguay. Erythrina chacoensis, Erythrina dominguezii and Erythrina xinguensis are listed there as synonyms. The Catalogue of Life records Portuguese names such as mulungu, mulungu-coral and suinã, and the Spanish names ceibo chaqueño and ceibo rosado.

The pouch and other mulungu products

The product photo shows a kraft-paper stand-up pouch with a sage-green Herborist label and, beside it, a heap of light-brown, fibrous pieces. The shop also lists the same species as shredded mulungu bark from Brazil and as a 4:1 dry bark extract. Both name bark as the plant part; the label on this pouch does not.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is mulungu traditionally used for?

Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu) is a South American tree whose bark and leaves feature in Brazilian traditional medicine. Its alkaloids have been studied in the laboratory and in animals; human data are lacking in the sources consulted.

Which pack sizes are available?

Three: 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg. Every size holds the same Herborist material.

Which part of the plant is in the pouch?

The label only gives the tag "[herb]" and names no plant part, so we do not state one. The photo shows light-brown, fibrous pieces.

Is Erythrina mulungu the accepted botanical name?

Yes. WCVP accepts Erythrina mulungu Mart. ex Benth.; Erythrina chacoensis and Erythrina dominguezii are synonyms of it.

How does this differ from the shredded mulungu bark from Brazil?

Both are Erythrina mulungu. The other product is listed as shredded bark with Brazil as its origin. This one carries the Herborist label, which states neither the plant part nor an origin.
