Reported effects and traditional use

Paullinia cupana, guaraná, is a liana of the Sapindaceae family, domesticated in the Brazilian Amazon for its caffeine-rich seeds. It is unclear which people domesticated it, but the Sateré-Mawé, along the Maués River, cultivate it extensively and have built it into their mythology: one of their myths tells how guaraná sprang from the eye of a murdered boy. In the late seventeenth century, the Jesuit João Felipe Betendorf noted that the Sateré-Mawé valued guaraná as highly as Europeans valued gold (Smith and Atroch 2010).

The seeds contain up to about 6% caffeine (Schimpl et al. 2013), about four times as much as coffee according to a 2010 review. The effects reported for guaraná are those of this caffeine.

Known compoundsCaffeine (up to about 6% of the seeds), traces of theobromine and theophylline, tannins.
Reported effectsAttributed to caffeine: a stimulant effect described in the literature, with nervousness and palpitations possible in sensitive people.
Traditional useSateré-Mawé (Brazilian Amazon): guaraná drink shared daily and on formal occasions; a plant of their mythology. It later became a national drink in Brazil and an ingredient of commercial drinks.
State of researchMostly chemistry and laboratory studies; the effects studied are largely explained by caffeine. No health claim is authorised in the EU for guaraná itself.

Good to know

  • Guaraná is a source of caffeine, richer in caffeine than coffee; nervousness and palpitations are possible in sensitive people.

Bottles and pouch

Four photos show the packaging. The cover groups a kraft pouch with a green and cream Maya Superfoods label (Guarana, Paullinia cupana, Dry Extract 20%, Made in Brazil seal), two small bottles with black caps and a bowl of the powder. Two close-ups show the bottles, labelled 10 g and 50 g, and the last photo shows the pouch with the bowl.

The species in brief

Paullinia cupana was described by Kunth in 1821 and belongs to the Sapindaceae. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts the name and records its native range as northern Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Venezuela; Paullinia sorbilis is one of its synonyms. Guaraná is the Portuguese and Spanish common name listed by GBIF.

Ground seed instead

If you are looking for the seed itself, milled without extraction, see guaraná powdered seeds from Brazil.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Where does guaraná come from?

Guaraná was domesticated in the Brazilian Amazon, between the lower Tapajós and lower Madeira rivers. It is unclear which people domesticated it, but the Sateré-Mawé of the Maués region cultivate it extensively and have built it into their mythology (Smith and Atroch 2010).

Does guaraná contain more caffeine than coffee?

Yes. The seeds can contain up to about 6% caffeine (Schimpl et al. 2013), about four times as much as coffee according to a 2010 review (Smith and Atroch 2010).

How does this differ from guaraná powder?

This is a dry extract of the seed; the guaraná seed powder is the seed ground as it is.

Which sizes are available?

Three sizes of the same extract: 10 g, 50 g and 250 g. The photos show small bottles and a kraft pouch; the supplier does not state which container each size is shipped in.

Is an extraction ratio given?

No. The label gives only the designation Dry Extract 20%.
