These are the dried, uncut flowers of Leonotis nepetifolia, a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). The name klip dagga is recorded in both Afrikaans and English; English sources also call the plant lion’s ear or Christmas candlestick. The flowers keep their curved orange tubes. A Maya Herbs label on the kraft bag is printed with Klip Dagga, Leonotis nepetifolia and Whole, next to a Made in Peru seal. You can order 25 g, 100 g, 250 g or 1 kg.

Native range and the Peru label
The combination Leonotis nepetifolia dates from 1811 (Robert Brown) and is the accepted name in the Kew checklist (WCVP). Kew records it as native to large parts of tropical and southern Africa and to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In the Americas it is listed as introduced, from Mexico and the Caribbean to Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. The pouch states only Made in Peru; the supplier gives no details on where the flowers were grown or collected.
How the flowers look
The photos show a heap of slender, curved flower tubes in orange and rust tones, with a few paler pieces between them. Whole flowers keep their tubular shape, unlike cut material, and they vary in length and colour. The shop also lists finely cut wild dagga flowers from South Africa, which come from the related species Leonotis leonurus.
