Not a true cedar
The label calls it Red Cedar, but Thuja plicata is no cedar in the botanical sense. It belongs to the cypress family, Cupressaceae, while the true cedars of the genus Cedrus belong to the pine family, Pinaceae. The name was published in 1824 in A. B. Lambert’s work on the genus Pinus; synonyms include Thuja gigantea Nutt. and Thuja menziesii Douglas ex Endl.
Native range
The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, gives the species as native to Alaska, British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and California. Oregon, named by the supplier, lies inside this range. In Europe the tree is recorded as introduced, for example in Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Norway.
