Cut root of the South African false horsewood
What you receive is root of Hippobromus pauciflorus, finely cut into small woody pieces. The plant belongs to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), is native to South Africa and Eswatini, and is called uqume or uqhume in isiZulu. Its kraft bag has a Maya Herbs label printed Uqume, “Rhus Pauciflorus” and Cut, with a Made in South Africa seal. Sizes: 25 g, 100 g and 500 g.

Why the label name differs
The species was first described by Linnaeus the Younger as Rhus pauciflora. Ludwig Radlkofer later moved it to the genus Hippobromus, and the Kew checklist (WCVP) and GBIF accept Hippobromus pauciflorus today; Rhus pauciflora is listed as a synonym. The pouch combines the old genus with the new ending, “Rhus Pauciflorus”, which is not a valid name. Kew records the plant as native to the Cape Provinces, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Provinces of South Africa and to Eswatini.
How the root looks
The photos show small, angular pieces of root wood, pale tan on the cut faces and darker where the bark remains. As a cut natural material, the pieces differ in size and colour. Another South African botanical in the range is finely cut wild dagga flowers.
