A species named by Linnaeus
Linnaeus published Althaea officinalis in Species Plantarum in 1753. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts the name in the mallow family, Malvaceae, and lists synonyms such as Malva officinalis and Althaea multiflora. Recorded English names include marsh mallow and white-mallow.
Native in Poland
According to the checklist, the species is native across much of Europe, among other places in Poland, Germany and France, and further east into western and central Asia, for example Iran and Kazakhstan, and as far as Pakistan. In North America it is listed as introduced. Poland, the origin given by the supplier, therefore lies within the natural range.
