Shredded muña from Peru

Traditional use
Minthostachys setosa is an Andean mint of the Lamiaceae family; in Peru the name muña covers it as well as its relative M. mollis. According to a 2008 review, the genus is of great importance in the Andes as a medicinal, aromatic and culinary plant, and for its essential oil. Muña is also used to keep insects away from stored potatoes (Maquera et al. 2009).
The essential oil of M. setosa is rich in pulegone (47.4% in a sample collected near Lima) and menthone (25.3%) (Senatore 1998). Published research on the genus consists mostly of chemical analyses and laboratory tests; according to the review, most studies concern another species, M. verticillata.

- Pulegone is recognised as hepatotoxic by the EMA’s HMPC (2016), based on serious and sometimes fatal poisonings with pennyroyal oil, which is very rich in pulegone.
Name and family
Briquet first described the plant as Bystropogon setosus; Epling transferred it to Minthostachys in 1936. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Minthostachys setosa (Briq.) Epling as a species of the mint family, Lamiaceae, the family that also includes the sages, such as the white sage leaves in our range.

Muña oil, a different species
