Reported effects and traditional use
Heteropterys tomentosa, often confused with Heteropterys aphrodisiaca, is known in Brazil as nó de cachorro (“dog’s knot”). In the folk medicine of the Cerrado, the root is reputed to be stimulant and aphrodisiac (Monteiro et al. 2011; Teixeira et al. 2024).
Extracts of the root, branches and leaves contain saponins, hydrolysable tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols and triterpenes. The work remains experimental, in rodents: a 2013 study observed no effect on several stress indicators in rats.
| Known compounds | Saponins, hydrolysable tannins, flavonoids, polyphenols and triterpenes, with similar composition in root, branches and leaves (Paula-Freire et al. 2013). |

| Reported effects | Reputed to be stimulant and aphrodisiac in Brazilian folk medicine; these attributions have not been verified in humans in the sources consulted. |
| Traditional use | Brazilian Cerrado: root used in folk medicine; the two names, H. tomentosa and H. aphrodisiaca, are frequently confused. |
| State of research | Rodent studies with mixed results; no human data in the sources consulted. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
Two names, one species
The name on the pouch, Heteropterys aphrodisiaca, was published by Machado in 1949 in the Brazilian journal Rodriguésia. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants now places it in synonymy under Heteropterys tomentosa, a name Adrien de Jussieu published in 1833 in the Flora Brasiliae Meridionalis. We keep the trade name in the product title because it is the name printed on the label and used by the supplier, and we give the accepted name alongside it.
Native range
According to the same checklist, Heteropterys tomentosa is native to south-eastern and west-central Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. The genus Heteropterys belongs to the Malpighiaceae.
The label
The cover photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label reading Nó de Cachorro, Heteropterys aphrodisiaca and Powdered, with a Made in Brazil seal and an empty net-weight field. The second photo shows only the powder.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
