Reported effects and traditional use
Heimia salicifolia is a shrub of the loosestrife family (Lythraceae) growing wild from Mexico to Argentina. In central Mexico it is called sinicuichi. Schultes ranks it among the plants of the region reported to affect hearing and adds that this use matters only in Mexico.
For traditional preparations, Schultes mainly describes sounds perceived as distant or distorted. A 1994 review notes that two isolated alkaloids, vertine and lythrine, did not reproduce any psychic effect in a preliminary clinical evaluation.

The species in brief
The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts Heimia salicifolia Link, a name published in 1822, and lists Nesaea salicifolia Kunth among its synonyms. The recorded native range is wide: Texas, most regions of Mexico, Jamaica and, in South America, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina and southern, south-eastern and west-central Brazil. GBIF lists the English names shrubby yellowcrest and willow-leaf heimia.
