Two Latin names for one species
Dracontium loretense K.Krause was published in 1932. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the GBIF backbone both list it as a synonym of Dracontium spruceanum (Schott) G.H.Zhu, a combination published in 1996 and based on Echidnium spruceanum Schott. Further synonyms listed there include Cyrtosperma spruceanum (Schott) Engl. and Dracontium carderi Hook.f. The label keeps the older name, so the product name does too.
Native range
The checklist records the native range of Dracontium spruceanum as Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Ecuador, Peru and northern Brazil. Peru, the country on this pouch, lies within that range. The Brazilian checklist Flora e Funga do Brasil gives milho-de-cobra as a Portuguese name for Dracontium loretense.
What the photos show
The cover photo shows the pouch beside a clay bowl of the powder; a second photo shows the bowl alone, and a close-up shows the fine, slightly grainy texture of the light beige powder. The three sizes contain the same powder and differ only in weight.
