Cardamom version of the 30 ml chilcuague spray
This 30 ml spray belongs to a small series of chilcuague liquids sold under the Maya Herbs label and told apart by the version printed on it. Here that version is cardamom. The plant behind the trade name chilcuague is Heliopsis longipes, and the supplier lists the product form as liquid, the volume as 30 ml and the country as Mexico. Mycotrop offers it in this one size.

Reported effects and traditional use
Heliopsis longipes, chilcuague (also chilcuán, pelitre or “golden root”), is a perennial composite endemic to the Sierra de Álvarez and the Sierra Gorda in Mexico, where the states of San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato and Querétaro meet. Only the root is used.
According to a 2008 ethnobotanical survey in nine traditional markets, the most frequent use is as a condiment in sauces, dishes and alcoholic drinks. It is valued for its pungent flavour and for the numbing sensation it causes in the mouth, which leads to it being paired with chilli. The root is harvested from the wild and pulled up with the plant; the collectors interviewed observe that the species has become scarcer.
| Known compounds | Alkamides, including affinin (a C10 alkamide), accumulated in the root but not in the leaves (Buitimea-Cantúa et al. 2020). |
|---|---|
| Reported effects | Pungent flavour and a numbing sensation in the mouth, described by buyers interviewed in Mexican markets (Cilia-López et al. 2008). |
| Traditional use | Condiment in sauces, dishes and alcoholic drinks in central Mexico; root sold all year in regional markets; other folk uses recorded. |
| State of research | Laboratory chemical and pharmacological studies of the root. No health claim is authorised in the EU. |
Bottle and label
The bottle is dark glass with a black spray head. Its label has a cream upper band with the Maya Herbs logo, then the plant name Chilcuague in large capitals on an orange band, with the word Cardamom in a white box below. A drawing shows a yellow, sunflower-like bloom beside green cardamom pods, and the volume of 30 ml is printed at the foot of the label. The second image on this page is an illustration of yellow flowers over a tangle of roots, not a product photo.
Plant and name
According to GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants, Heliopsis longipes (A.Gray) S.F.Blake is an accepted species of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to north-eastern Mexico. The supplier names no plant part and no carrier liquid for this spray, so neither is stated here.
The three 30 ml versions
The same bottle and label are used for two other versions: honey and tangerine and mint. They differ only in the version named on the label; volume, form and supplier are the same.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
