Mói mapacho as a rolled leaf bundle
Mói is the name of this mapacho from Brazil. Here it comes as leaf of Nicotiana rustica rolled into a firm bundle, the form the supplier lists as bundle. You choose a half roll or a whole roll; the supplier states no length or weight for either. The three photos show rolls with a mottled amber to dark brown surface and tightly layered cut ends. Mycotrop sells it, like all its products, strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

One name, two forms
Mói is sold at Mycotrop in two forms. The roll keeps the leaf whole and is sold by the piece. The Mói mapacho powder is the same Brazilian name in powdered form, with fixed weights of 10 g, 50 g and 250 g. The supplier lists both as Nicotiana rustica leaf from Brazil.
Other rolls
Arapiraca mapacho is also offered as a half or whole roll; the Sabiá tobacco leaf roll comes as a single 100 g roll, and the Maso roll from Peru as one whole roll. All of them are listed in the Mapacho category.
Mapacho: what is known
Mapacho is the Amazonian name for Nicotiana rustica, a tobacco species in the nightshade family, distinct from common tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum. Its leaves are much richer in nicotine. In Brazil it is sold under local variety names such as Mói, Sabiá, Arapiraca or Tauari, as rolls of twisted leaves or as powder.
According to the anthropologist Johannes Wilbert, who studied some 300 South American societies, tobacco there is closely tied to shamanism. It is smoked, snuffed, chewed, drunk as a juice or licked as a paste: the ambil of the peoples of the north-western Amazon.
| Known compounds | Nicotine: 4 to 9.5% in dried N. rustica leaves, against roughly 1 to 3% for N. tabacum (PROSEA; Laszlo et al. 2022). |
|---|---|
| Reported effects | Those of nicotine: faster heart rate, higher blood pressure; at high doses, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. |
| Traditional use | Shamanic and ceremonial use among many South American peoples, in several forms: smoke, snuff, juice, paste (Wilbert 1987). |
| State of research | The effects of nicotine and the risks of tobacco are very well documented; few studies deal with N. rustica specifically. |
Good to know
- Nicotine is addictive and speeds up the heart; tobacco is not suitable during pregnancy or for people with heart disease.
- The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies tobacco smoke and smokeless tobacco as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1).
- Nicotine is toxic to children and pets: keep tobacco out of their reach.
Storing tobacco
Keep rolls and powders in tightly closed packaging, away from light, heat and moisture.
