Reported effects and traditional use
Nymphaea ampla, the white water lily of tropical America, features strongly in Maya art: on a vase from Bonampak, the headpiece of the central figure, who performs a ritual dance, is adorned with a water lily, and a bas-relief in the tomb of Pacal, in the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque, also depicts them (Bertol et al. 2004). Some authors see in them a plant used in rites, by analogy with the blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) of ancient Egypt.
Aporphine-type alkaloids, including apomorphine, have been identified in the bulbs and roots of N. ampla. This chemistry supports the hypothesis of a psychoactive use, which remains a conjecture based on iconography.
| Known compounds | Aporphine-type alkaloids, including apomorphine, identified in the bulbs and roots; the flowers are less documented. |

| Reported effects | Psychoactive effects are inferred from Maya iconography and chemistry; they remain hypothetical and unestablished (Bertol et al. 2004). |
| Traditional use | Sacred motif in Maya art (Bonampak, Palenque); ritual use inferred, in parallel with the blue lotus of ancient Egypt. |
| State of research | Hypotheses by ethnobotanists based on iconography and a few alkaloid analyses. No health claim is authorised in the EU. |
About the species
Nymphaea ampla (Salisb.) DC. was published in 1821; its basionym is Castalia ampla Salisb. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it in the Nymphaeaceae, the water-lily family, and lists Nymphaea sinuata and Nymphaea candolleana among its synonyms. The English name recorded for the species is dotleaf waterlily; white water lily is the trade name used on the pouch and by the supplier.
Native range
The recorded native range lies in the Americas: from Texas, Florida and Mexico through Central America and the Caribbean to Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador and Peru. The pouch and the supplier name Thailand as the country of this product.
Water lily or lotus
Water lilies of the genus Nymphaea and the lotus, Nelumbo, belong to different families. The shop lists cut sacred lotus flowers from Thailand in the same form, and whole white water lily flowers from Sri Lanka, which are a different species, Nymphaea alba.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
