Graviola leaves, milled to powder
Graviola is the trade name under which the supplier sells the leaves of Annona muricata, the soursop tree of the custard-apple family, Annonaceae. This listing contains those leaves, ground to a fine powder. The supplier gives leaf as the plant part and powder as the form; the Maya Herbs pouch reads Graviola, the botanical name and Powdered. Mycotrop offers 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg and sells the powder strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

Traditional use
Annona muricata, the soursop (graviola), is a fruit tree of the warmest parts of Central America, northern South America and the Caribbean. Its fruit goes into syrups, ice creams and drinks.
According to a 2015 review, communities in Africa and South America also use the leaves, bark and roots in their folk pharmacopoeias. The leaves contain annonaceous acetogenins, a family of which more than 100 compounds have been isolated from the species.
| Known compounds | Annonaceous acetogenins (more than 100 isolated, including annonacin) in the leaves, bark, seeds, roots and fruit. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Fruit eaten in tropical America; leaves, bark and roots cited in the folk medicine of Africa and South America. |
| State of research | Laboratory and animal studies; a risk assessment published in the EFSA Journal in 2020 notes the lack of adequate studies, particularly on long-term use. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this plant. |
Good to know
- Annonacin, an acetogenin found in the plant, is neurotoxic in the laboratory; it caused brain lesions in rats.
- A case-control study in Guadeloupe (1999) linked the eating of Annonaceae fruit and herbal teas to atypical forms of parkinsonism. A causal link has not been established.
- A risk assessment published in the EFSA Journal in 2020 considers that the data do not allow a safe level of intake to be set for certain Annona muricata preparations.
Botanical identity
Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Annona muricata L., named by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum in 1753. Its recorded native range covers south-eastern Mexico, Central America and north-western South America, from Colombia and Venezuela to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. The tree is listed as introduced in about sixty other regions, among them north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil. GBIF gives soursop and guanabana as English names, corossol in French and Stachelannone in German.
Colour and origin details
Both photos show a fine, olive-green powder in a terracotta dish; the first also shows the kraft pouch. The listing name and the Country field of the supplier record give South Africa, while the supplier’s own product title names Brazil and the seal printed on the pouch reads Made in Brazil, so the origin is stated here as each source gives it. A paler, greyer leaf powder from the same supplier is the Brazilian black jack leaf powder.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
