Origin and botanical identity
According to the supplier, the cacao is grown by local farmers of the San Martín region around the Río Abiseo National Park. Botanically, the block is Theobroma cacao L., the accepted name in the GBIF backbone, in the mallow family (Malvaceae); Linnaeus published the name in 1753. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants includes Peru in the native range of the species, together with Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador and northern Brazil. Criollo is the variety name given by the supplier; the species name stays the same.
From tree to block
