Mulungu bark as a 4:1 dry extract
Here the bark of mulungu, Erythrina mulungu, comes as a dry extract rather than as cut bark. In the main photo a kraft pouch and two small vials, all with the green Maya Herbs label reading Mulungu, Erythrina mulungu and Dry Extract 4:1, stand next to a clay pot of fine, pale beige powder; the pouch also carries a Made in Brazil badge. The supplier record for reference 0468 confirms bark as the plant part, dry extract as the form and Brazil as the country. Mycotrop sells it in two weights, 10 g and 50 g.

Traditional use and composition
Erythrina mulungu is a tree of the legume family (Fabaceae) native to South America (south-eastern and west-central Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, according to Kew), called mulungu or coral tree for its red flowers. In Brazilian traditional medicine, preparations of its bark or leaves are used (Setti-Perdigão et al. 2013).
Alkaloids of the Erythrina type, such as erythravine, 11-hydroxyerythravine and 11-hydroxyerysotrine, have been isolated from the species. In the laboratory they inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and extracts have altered the behaviour of animals.

About the 4:1 ratio
The figure 4:1 appears on every label in the photos and in the product name used by the supplier. Neither source names a solvent, a carrier or an extraction method, so they are not described here. In the photos the extract is a pale beige powder, clearly lighter than the straw-coloured fibres of the shredded bark.
Botanical background
The species was published by George Bentham in 1859 in Flora Brasiliensis. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Erythrina mulungu Mart. ex Benth. as a species of Fabaceae whose native range covers Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina and south-eastern and west-central Brazil. GBIF records the Portuguese names mulungu and mulungu-coral for it.
Bark, capsules and tincture
For the bark itself, see the shredded mulungu bark from Brazil. The species is also available as mulungu capsules and as a liquid mulungu tincture.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
