Traditional use

Turnera diffusa, damiana, is a shrub of the genus Turnera, half a dozen of whose 135 accepted species are used in traditional medicine. A 2014 review presents it as one of the best-known plants with an aphrodisiac reputation in traditional use; according to the same authors, most traditional uses cannot be related to a particular compound.

An NMR analysis of authenticated material published in 2026 found no caffeine in damiana; its authors attribute the opposite claim, widespread in the literature, to circular referencing.

Known compoundsFlavonoids (22 described in the genus Turnera, including apigenin), cyanogenic glycosides, terpenoids (Szewczyk and Zidorn 2014). No caffeine according to a 2026 NMR analysis.
Traditional useAphrodisiac reputation in traditional medicine, one of the best known according to the 2014 review, which also cites other folk uses.
State of researchFor most uses and tested activities, no particular compound can be named (2014 review). Laboratory and animal studies. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this plant.

Botanical background

The name Turnera diffusa was published in 1820 in Roemer and Schultes' Systema Vegetabilium, based on a name by Willdenow. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts it and places the genus Turnera in the passion flower family, Passifloraceae; older classifications, including the GBIF backbone, still use a separate family, Turneraceae. Plant checklists from the Dominican Republic describe it as a shrub.

Where the species grows

WCVP lists a wide native range: Texas; central, northern and southern Mexico; Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama; the Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and smaller Caribbean islands; and north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil. In Brazil, Flora e Funga do Brasil records it in caatinga, cerrado, rocky upland grassland and semi-deciduous forest. The Herborist pouch does not state where these leaves were collected.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why does damiana have an aphrodisiac reputation?

The reputation comes from traditional medicine: a 2014 review places damiana among the best-known plants with an aphrodisiac reputation. The same authors stress that, with few exceptions, traditional uses cannot be related to a particular compound (Szewczyk and Zidorn 2014).

Does damiana contain caffeine?

No, according to a 2026 NMR analysis of authenticated material. The authors attribute the opposite idea to circular referencing in the literature (Pauli et al. 2026).

Which part of the plant does the pouch contain?

Cut leaves, as stated in the supplier listing. The Herborist label itself only carries the tag "[herb]".

Which sizes can I order?

50 g, 250 g and 1 kg of the same cut leaves.

Why does the family say Passifloraceae and not Turneraceae?

WCVP now includes Turnera in the passion flower family, Passifloraceae. Turneraceae is the older family name that some databases still use.

Where is Turnera diffusa native?

From Texas and Mexico through Central America and the Caribbean to north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil, according to WCVP.
