Scutellaria galericulata, packed by Herborist

This pouch holds dried herb of Scutellaria galericulata, a species of the mint family known in English as skullcap, marsh skullcap or hooded skullcap. The Herborist label reads "Skullcap", "Scutellaria galericulata" and "[herb]", and the 50 g pouch in the photo stands beside a heap of finely cut, yellow-green plant material. Neither the label nor the product data states a country of origin, so none is given here. Three sizes of the same herb are available: 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg.

Traditional use

Scutellaria galericulata, common skullcap, is a member of the mint family that grows wild in Europe, for example in eastern Poland and southern Bulgaria. The “skullcap” of North American herbal products is a different species, S. lateriflora (Lin et al. 2009). Little has been published on the traditional use of S. galericulata.

In a 2016 study of seventeen wild populations in eastern Poland, total flavonoid content ranged from 0.21 to 0.50% of dry matter, with chrysin-7-O-glucuronide, baicalin and scutellarin as the dominant compounds. A 2020 Bulgarian study also measured baicalin, scutellarin and wogonoside in the species.

Known compoundsFlavonoids: chrysin-7-O-glucuronide, baicalin, scutellarin (0.21 to 0.50% of dry matter in eastern Poland, 2016).
Traditional useLittle published on this species; the “skullcap” of North American products is S. lateriflora.
State of researchMostly chemical studies of wild populations; little published specific to this species. No health claim is authorised in the EU.

Good to know

  • The name “skullcap” covers several species; products sold under it (S. lateriflora) have occasionally been adulterated with germander (Teucrium), whose diterpenes are potentially toxic to the liver (Lin et al. 2009).

The type of the skullcap genus

Linnaeus described Scutellaria galericulata in Species Plantarum in 1753, on page 599, with the habitat note "in Europae littoribus", on the shores of Europe. In 1990 the botanist Paton chose a sheet in the Linnaean herbarium as its lectotype, and the species is the type of the genus Scutellaria. Scopoli moved it in 1771 to a genus Cassida, a name that survives only as a synonym. The red list of Flanders places this long-lived plant in marshes and woodland.

Native range

WCVP, the World Checklist of Vascular Plants kept by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, records the species as native across the temperate northern hemisphere: almost all of Europe, from Portugal and Spain to Scandinavia and European Russia; the Caucasus, Türkiye and Iran; Central Asia, Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, the Russian Far East and Japan; and North America, from Alaska, the Yukon and Labrador south to Arizona, Texas and Florida. WCVP lists no area where it is introduced.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Scutellaria galericulata the same plant as American skullcap?

No. The “skullcap” of North American herbal products is Scutellaria lateriflora. S. galericulata is another species of the same genus, wild in Europe, whose main flavonoids include baicalin and scutellarin.

Which skullcap species is this?

Scutellaria galericulata, as printed on the label. It is a separate species from Scutellaria lateriflora, which is also called skullcap in English, or more precisely blue or side-flowering skullcap.

Which pack sizes are available?

Three: 50 g, 250 g and 1 kg of the same herb. The 50 g size matches the pouch in the photo.

Which part of the plant is in the pouch?

The label says "[herb]", and the photo shows finely cut, yellow-green plant material. The product data does not break this down into stems, leaves or flowers.

Where does the herb come from?

The label and the product data name no country. The species itself is native to large parts of Europe, Asia and North America.
