Traditional use

Withania somnifera, ashwagandha, is an evergreen shrub of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), found in parts of India, Africa and the Middle East. According to the US NCCIH, it has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, especially in the Ayurvedic tradition.

Withanolides are its most characteristic compounds: a 2025 study profiled 36 of them in this species and in Datura metel. Alkaloids and sitoindosides are also cited.

About Withania somnifera

GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accept Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal in the Solanaceae. Linnaeus named it Physalis somnifera, and Dunal moved it to the genus Withania in 1852. The checklist records a wide native range: much of Africa, southern Europe from Spain to Greece and Cyprus, western Asia and the Arabian Peninsula, and from Iran and Afghanistan to India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and central China. English names recorded in GBIF include Indian ginseng and winter cherry.

Root powder and the Maya extract series

If you are looking for the plant material rather than a liquid, the ashwagandha powdered root is listed with the herbs. Among the extracts, the purple passionflower extract uses the same 10 ml Maya bottle with a turquoise label and also declares alcohol 20%. Every liquid extract in the shop is grouped under Extracts.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
