Blue lotus is the trade name of Nymphaea caerulea, a water lily, and this product is an extract of its flowers in resin form. The supplier, Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem, lists it as a resin extract with a ratio of 50:1, names the flower as the plant part and gives Thailand as the country. Reported effects and traditional use

Nymphaea caerulea, the blue lotus or blue Egyptian water lily, is a water lily whose accepted name is Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea. It appears on Egyptian papyri and tombs from the 14th century BCE. In 2024 an analysis of a Ptolemaic ritual vase of the 2nd century BCE found traces of the plant, with others, in a liquid used for ritual practices (Tanasi et al. 2024).

The effects reported for blue lotus are a mild relaxation, sometimes euphoria, but also agitation or confusion in some users. They rest on anecdotal accounts and a case series, with no controlled human trial.

Known compoundsFlavonoids and anthocyanins; aporphine-type alkaloids (nuciferine, apomorphine) are cited, but an authentic extract analysed in 2023 held only traces of nuciferine and no apomorphine.
Reported effectsMild relaxation, euphoria in some; agitation, confusion or derealisation reported in clinical cases. Level of evidence: anecdotal accounts and case series, no controlled trial.
Traditional useAncient Egypt: funerary and ritual iconography (papyri, tombs, vases); a relaxing reputation in traditional medicine according to a 2023 review.
State of researchLittle data, mostly analytical, and no published safety data on the whole plant. No health claim is authorised in the EU for blue lotus.

Good to know

  • Emergency services have described states of agitation, confusion or psychotic symptoms after blue lotus products (a case series of five patients; a 2026 review).
  • The UK authority OPSS noted the lack of information on content, its variability and the purity of these products.

Blue lotus and its botanical name

Despite its common name, blue lotus is a water lily: GBIF places it in the family Nymphaeaceae. The trade name Nymphaea caerulea goes back to Savigny; the GBIF backbone lists it as a synonym and accepts the plant as Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea (Savigny) Verdc. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) records this variety as native to much of Africa, from Egypt and Ethiopia to South Africa, and to Palestine, Oman and Yemen. GBIF’s English names include blue lotus, blue water lily and Egyptian blue lotus.

Other blue lotus formats

For the flower itself, there are whole blue lotus flowers from Thailand and Egyptian blue lotus flowers from Sri Lanka. A liquid alternative is the 15:1 blue lotus flower tincture, also from Thailand. Blue lotus is combined with cacao in the Maya cacao and blue lotus extract.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
