Reported effects and traditional use

Heliopsis longipes, chilcuague (also chilcuán, pelitre or “golden root”), is a perennial composite endemic to the Sierra de Álvarez and the Sierra Gorda in Mexico, where the states of San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato and Querétaro meet. Only the root is used.

According to a 2008 ethnobotanical survey in nine traditional markets, the most frequent use is as a condiment in sauces, dishes and alcoholic drinks. It is valued for its pungent flavour and for the numbing sensation it causes in the mouth, which leads to it being paired with chilli. The root is harvested from the wild and pulled up with the plant; the collectors interviewed observe that the species has become scarcer.

Known compoundsAlkamides, including affinin (a C10 alkamide), accumulated in the root but not in the leaves (Buitimea-Cantúa et al. 2020).
Reported effectsPungent flavour and a numbing sensation in the mouth, described by buyers interviewed in Mexican markets (Cilia-López et al. 2008).
Traditional useCondiment in sauces, dishes and alcoholic drinks in central Mexico; root sold all year in regional markets; other folk uses recorded.
State of researchLaboratory chemical and pharmacological studies of the root. No health claim is authorised in the EU.

About Heliopsis longipes

GBIF and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants accept Heliopsis longipes (A.Gray) S.F.Blake as a species of the Asteraceae. A. Gray first described it as Philactis longipes, and S.F. Blake placed it in the genus Heliopsis in 1924. The checklist gives north-eastern Mexico as its native range; the Catalogue of Life names the states of Durango, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. In Spanish, the plant is also recorded as chilcuán.

Other chilcuague formats

This 30 ml concentrate is one of several chilcuague products in the shop. If you would like a larger bottle, the 60 ml chilcuague liquid extract spray holds twice the volume. The plant material itself is available as whole dried chilcuague root. Flavoured 30 ml sprays with cardamom, mint or honey and tangerine are listed separately, and every extract in the shop is grouped under Extracts.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
