Composition and current knowledge

Chaga is the fungus Inonotus obliquus, which grows on birches in boreal forests. According to a 2023 review, the Khanty of Siberia are said to have used it as early as the 12th century, and Indigenous peoples of Canada such as the Cree, Ojibway and Denesuline also have a tradition of use; a 2025 review lists it among the folk remedies of 16th- and 17th-century Russia and Northern Europe.

Its composition is complex: more than 250 secondary metabolites have been described, including polysaccharides (β-glucans), terpenoids (betulin, lanosterol), polyphenols, sterols and melanin. Clinical data in humans remain insufficient.

Known compoundsMore than 250 metabolites: polysaccharides (β-glucans), terpenoids (betulin, lanosterol), polyphenols (hispidin, phelligridins), sterols, melanin, minerals (Fordjour et al. 2023).
Traditional useKhanty of Siberia (from the 12th century according to a review), Russia and Northern Europe; Indigenous peoples of Canada (Cree, Ojibway, Denesuline).
State of researchMostly laboratory and animal studies; the 2023 and 2025 reviews judge clinical data insufficient. No health claim is authorised for chaga in the EU.

Good to know

  • Chaga is rich in oxalates: a case of oxalate kidney injury was reported in a 69-year-old man after prolonged use of chaga powder (Kwon et al. 2022).

What the pieces look like

The product photos show irregular, angular chunks heaped in a terracotta bowl beside the kraft-paper pouch. Many pieces carry a cracked, almost black outer crust on one side, while the broken faces show a rust-brown to golden interior with a fibrous grain. A close-up shows freshly broken pieces with a bright orange-brown core. Because the chaga is sold whole, size and shape differ from piece to piece.

Inonotus obliquus: names and classification

In the GBIF taxonomic backbone, Inonotus obliquus (Fr.) Pilát is the accepted name. The species belongs to the family Hymenochaetaceae in the order Hymenochaetales, and older names recorded as synonyms include Polyporus obliquus and Phellinus obliquus. GBIF lists vernacular names from many countries where it is known: pakurikääpä in Finnish, sprängticka in Swedish and Schiefer Schillerporling in German.

Whole pieces, powder or extract

If you prefer another form of the same species, the chaga powder from Finland, 100 g comes from the same supplier, already ground. The chaga extract (Inonotus obliquus), 30 ml is a liquid in a dropper bottle.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
