Traditional use

Mikania glomerata, guaco, is a climbing member of the daisy family native to South America, particularly Brazil. Its leaves are among the best-known plants of Brazilian folk medicine; it is often used interchangeably with a related species, M. laevigata, also called guaco (Garcia et al. 2025). Guaco is on Brazil’s national list of essential medicines (RENAME) and on the RENISUS list of plants of interest to the public health system (dos Santos et al. 2025).

Reviews cite chlorogenic and dicaffeoylquinic acids, coumarin, o-coumaric acid and diterpenes such as kaurenoic acid. According to a 2025 review, coumarin is more abundant in M. laevigata and may be low or absent in M. glomerata.

Known compoundsChlorogenic and dicaffeoylquinic acids, coumarin (sometimes low or absent), o-coumaric acid, diterpenes such as kaurenoic acid (Garcia et al. 2025).
Traditional usePlant of Brazilian folk medicine, whose leaves are widely known; detailed uses not repeated here.
State of researchMostly laboratory and animal studies; a 2025 review notes evidence gaps and frequent confusion with M. laevigata. No health claim is authorised in the EU.

Good to know

  • Coumarin, present in variable amounts in guaco, can cause liver injury in a small subset of exposed people (Pitaro et al. 2022).

The species in brief

Sprengel described Mikania glomerata in 1826. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts the name, places it in the Asteraceae and records it as native to north-eastern, south-eastern and southern Brazil, Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina, with further records from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Its synonyms include Mikania hederifolia and Aliconia guaco, the second of which preserves the common name in Latin form.

Pouch and photos

The cover photo shows a kraft stand-up pouch with a green Maya Herbs label reading Guaco, Mikania glomerata and Powdered, with a Made in Brazil seal and an empty net-weight field, next to a shallow terracotta dish of powder. The second photo shows the dish on its own, with the powder’s greyish olive tone.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
