Reported effects and traditional use

The kola nut, the seed of Cola nitida, is chewed in many West African cultures, alone or in a group. It is offered ceremonially to chiefs and guests on important occasions (Amadi et al. 2020).

The literature describes the nut as chewed for its stimulant and euphoric qualities. Its main constituents are purine alkaloids, caffeine and theobromine; the extract is also used as a flavouring in the food industry (Amadi and Nwachukwu 2020).

Good to know

  • Kola nut contains caffeine and theobromine, like coffee, tea and cocoa.
  • In a 2020 study in rabbits, kola nut reduced exposure to a medicine, metoclopramide; the authors point to a role of caffeine.

The kola tree

Kola nuts are the seeds of Cola nitida (Vent.) Schott & Endl., a tree of the Malvaceae. It was first described in 1805 as Sterculia nitida; the current name dates from 1832. The Kew checklist (WCVP) gives its native range across West and Central Africa, from Senegal, Gambia and Sierra Leone through Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria to Cameroon, Gabon and both Congos. Elsewhere, for example in Sri Lanka or Trinidad, the tree was introduced. English common names include kola nut and bitter cola; in French the tree is called kolatier, in German Kolabaum.

Bottle and label

In the product photo, the bottle stands alone on white, its red label facing the camera. The ratio 2:1 is printed on the label itself, next to the 10 ml volume. No other label wording is quoted on this page. The same Maya bottle format is used for the Korean ginseng tincture 1:5, and the shop also lists powdered kola nut as loose seed material.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
