Reported effects and traditional use

Sceletium tortuosum, kanna or kougoed, is a succulent plant of southern Africa. According to a 2021 review, the San and Khoikhoi have long used it, notably in Namaqualand and the Karoo; its name means ‘something to chew’. The oldest known written record is an illustration by Simon van der Stel dated 1685.

Traditional accounts and reviews describe a lighter mood and relaxation. These descriptions rest mostly on historical testimony, animal studies and small human trials with a standardised extract.

Known compoundsMesembrine-type alkaloids (mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol). Mesembrine inhibits the serotonin transporter in binding assays; PDE4 inhibition has also been reported.
Reported effectsA lighter mood and relaxation, described by historical sources and reviews; they rest on testimony, animal studies and small human trials (16 volunteers in one of them).
Traditional useSan and Khoikhoi of southern Africa (Namaqualand, Karoo); the name kougoed means ‘something to chew’; first written record in 1685 (Manganyi et al. 2021).
State of researchIn vitro and animal studies and a few small human trials with a standardised extract; toxicological studies are still needed. No health claim is authorised for kanna in the EU.

Good to know

  • Kanna alkaloids inhibit the serotonin transporter, the target of SSRI antidepressants, so an interaction with serotonergic medicines is theoretically possible (Makolo et al. 2019).
  • Safety data are limited: toxicological studies are still needed (Manganyi et al. 2021).

Name, family and native range

Kanna is the name under which Sceletium tortuosum (L.) N.E.Br. is sold, and it is the name printed on this pouch. That combination was published in 1926. Linnaeus had described the plant much earlier, in 1753, as Mesembryanthemum tortuosum, and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants now lists this original name as the accepted one. The species belongs to the Aizoaceae and is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa. The label names the country where the product was made, not where the plants were grown, so this page gives no growing region.

The pouch and the photos

The first photo shows a kraft-paper pouch with the green Maya Herbs label beside a clay bowl of powder. Below the product name, the label has a net-weight field, left blank in the photo, the “Made in Thailand” mark, the address of Maya World Trading BV in Haarlem and the website mayaherbs.com. Two more photos show the powder in the bowl and as a loose heap in which fine fibres are visible. The last photo shows a flowering plant.

Other kanna formats

For a smaller quantity or a different form, the dry kanna extract 50:1 comes in 2 g, 5 g or 20 g glass jars, and the fermented kanna paste in 0.5 g. A 2:1 tincture in a 10 ml bottle and Berry gummies complete the Kanna category.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
