Shredded sinicuichi leaves from Mexico
Sinicuichi is the common name of Heimia salicifolia, a plant species of the Americas. This product is its shredded leaf material. The supplier lists leaf as the plant part, shredded as the form and Mexico as the country. The Maya Herbs pouch in the photo reads “Sinicuichi” with the botanical name (printed “THeimia salicifolia”), the word “Whole” and a “Made in Mexico” seal. Three weights are available: 25 g, 100 g and 1 kg. Mycotrop sells the leaves strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

Reported effects and traditional use
Heimia salicifolia is a shrub of the loosestrife family (Lythraceae) growing wild from Mexico to Argentina. In central Mexico it is called sinicuichi. Schultes ranks it among the plants of the region reported to affect hearing and adds that this use matters only in Mexico.
For traditional preparations, Schultes mainly describes sounds perceived as distant or distorted. A 1994 review notes that two isolated alkaloids, vertine and lythrine, did not reproduce any psychic effect in a preliminary clinical evaluation.
| Known compounds | Quinolizidine-type alkaloids, mainly vertine (cryogenine), lyfoline, lythrine and nesodine; at least nine alkaloids have been isolated (Rumalla et al. 2008). |
|---|---|
| Reported effects | Auditory effects (sounds perceived as distant or distorted) attributed to traditional preparations (Schultes 1976); not reproduced by two isolated alkaloids in a preliminary clinical evaluation (Malone and Rother 1994). |
| Traditional use | Central Mexico: sinicuichi, a plant reported to affect hearing; the species also has a long folk reputation across the Americas. |
| State of research | Isolated alkaloids studied mostly in animals; a preliminary clinical evaluation did not show the psychic effects attributed to traditional preparations (1994). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
Name and native range
The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Heimia salicifolia Link, published in 1822 in Enumeratio Plantarum Horti Regii Berolinensis Altera; the GBIF backbone cites the same name with the authors (Kunth) Link. The epithet salicifolia refers to the willow-like leaves. The species belongs to Lythraceae, the loosestrife family. According to WCVP it is native to Texas and all regions of Mexico, to Jamaica, and in South America to Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina and southern, south-eastern and central-western Brazil. Populations in the Azores and Queensland are recorded as introduced.
What the photos show
The first photo shows the labelled pouch beside a clay bowl; the second shows the bowl alone. The material is a loose mix of green, narrow leaves and thin, brownish stem sections, with an occasional yellow fragment. The third photo shows a flowering branch of the living plant with yellow flowers and narrow leaves; it illustrates the species and is not the packed product.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
