Hierochloe or Anthoxanthum?
Sweetgrass is still traded as Hierochloe odorata, the name Palisot de Beauvois published in 1812. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) now lists that name as a synonym and accepts Anthoxanthum nitens (Weber) Y.Schouten & Veldkamp, published in 1985, which places sweetgrass in the same genus as sweet vernal grass. Both names point to the same plant, a member of the grass family, Poaceae. WCVP gives it a very wide native range across the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere: Greenland, Canada, Alaska and many US states from Maine and New York to Montana, Colorado and California, as well as northern and central Europe, Siberia, Central Asia, China and Korea.
Loose blades or braids
