Traditional use and composition
Peyote (Lophophora williamsii), called hikuri by the Wixárika (Huichol), is a small spineless cactus of the Chihuahuan Desert, from northern Mexico to southern Texas. For the Wixárika it is a central figure of their religious culture and the goal of an annual pilgrimage to Wirikuta, in the state of San Luis Potosí; this sacred route has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2025. The Native American Church also uses it in a religious setting; US federal law exempts this ceremonial use.
The use is very old: archaeological specimens from Texas have been dated to about 3780–3660 BCE and contained mescaline (El-Seedi et al. 2005). The IUCN classes the species as Vulnerable, with wild harvesting a factor.
| Known compounds | Mescaline (a phenethylamine) and tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids: anhalonidine, pellotine, anhalonine, lophophorine (El-Seedi et al. 2005). |

| State of research | Alkaloids well characterised; mescaline is controlled under the international convention on psychotropic substances. Species rated Vulnerable (IUCN). No health claim is authorised in the EU. |
The cactus behind the name
Lophophora williamsii is a member of the Cactaceae. The current combination of the name was published in 1894. The Kew checklist (WCVP) restricts its native range to north-eastern and south-western Mexico and to Texas; no introduced occurrences are listed. Spanish names recorded in GBIF include peyote and peyotl. The plant itself is not part of this listing: the bottle holds a liquid preparation, and the label does not state how much plant material it contains or which parts were used beyond the word flower.
Bottle and label
The single photo shows the bottle upright against a white background, with the label text running vertically. Other label text is not repeated here. The same Maya bottle and dropper are used for other 10 ml liquids in the shop, for example the kola nut tincture and the Korean ginseng tincture.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
- Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
- The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
