This plant contains harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine), which are monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). MAOIs block the breakdown of many substances in the body.

- Foods rich in tyramine (aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented products): risk of a sharp rise in blood pressure.

Traditional use and composition
Banisteriopsis caapi is a vine of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Amazon basin. It is best known as one of the ingredients of ayahuasca, a drink that Indigenous peoples and local communities in Amazonia have long used in ritual and traditional settings.
In Brazil, this use has spread to religious organisations such as the União do Vegetal and Santo Daime. A 2026 review lists 119 ethnotaxa of B. caapi, that is, 119 folk names for types of the vine.

What the photos show

A liana of the Malpighiaceae
The species was first published as Banisteria caapi Spruce ex Griseb. in 1858; C.V. Morton placed it in the genus Banisteriopsis in 1931. The WCVP of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Banisteriopsis caapi in the Malpighiaceae. Its native range includes Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil and north-western Argentina. Caapi is a common name recorded by GBIF. Caupuri is a trade name: GBIF lists no accepted variety of the species.
Brazil: the label and the natural range
The Made in Brazil seal names the country where the product was made; northern and west-central Brazil are part of the native range of the species. The label names no region and no people.
