Important: a plant that contains DMT
Good to know
This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.
- Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
- We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.
Traditional use and composition
Acacia acuminata is an acacia endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. The Noongar call it manjart. According to the Western Australian Museum, they used the seeds, the gum and the hard wood, which was shaped into boomerangs, throwing clubs, digging sticks and spear-throwers.
A 2022 review lists alkaloids of the tryptamine family in this species, in the leaves and stems. Its author stresses that the use of acacias by Aboriginal peoples is not documented well enough to say whether they were used for psychotropic purposes.
| Known compounds | Alkaloids of the tryptamine family in the leaves and stems, according to published analyses reviewed in 2022. Contents may vary with geographical origin. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Among the Noongar: seeds, gum and hard wood for tools and weapons. No ritual use of the phyllodes is described in the sources consulted. |
| State of research | Few published chemical data, mostly old; almost nothing on the plant itself in humans. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
A wattle from Western Australia
Bentham published Acacia acuminata in 1842 in the London Journal of Botany. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts the name, places the species in Fabaceae and lists Acacia doratoxylon Meisn. and Racosperma acuminatum (Benth.) Pedley among its synonyms. It gives the native range as south-western Australia, within the state of Western Australia. GBIF records jam wattle, raspberry jam wattle and jamwood as English names; Mangart is the name used by the supplier.
What the photos show
The cover photo shows the kraft stand-up pouch with a Maya Ethnobotanicals label reading Acacia acuminata and Whole, plus a Made in Australia seal, beside a woven tray piled with long, slender, yellow-green phyllodes. The second photo shows the tray on its own; a few thin grey twigs are mixed in among the phyllodes.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant

Frequently asked questions
What was Acacia acuminata traditionally used for?
