Mulateiro ash: burned bark of Calycophyllum spruceanum

This jar contains the bark ash of Calycophyllum spruceanum, sold by the supplier under the common name mulateiro. The label adds a second name, pau mulata, and describes the contents as naturally burned bark. What you receive is a pale grey powder in a 50 g jar with a black lid; there is no other size, and the supplier gives Brazil as the country of origin. Mycotrop lists it in the Ashes category and sells it strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

Calycophyllum spruceanum in brief

The GBIF backbone and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accept Calycophyllum spruceanum (Benth.) Hook.f. ex K.Schum. as a species of the Rubiaceae, the coffee family. The older name Eukylista spruceana Benth. is listed as a synonym, and mulateiro and pau-mulato appear among the Portuguese vernacular names that GBIF records for the species. WCVP gives its native range as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, together with the North, Northeast, West-Central and Southeast regions of Brazil. In Trinidad and Tobago the species is recorded as introduced.

The ash on its own

Mulateiro is also the name of a rapé blend, Yawanawá Mulateiro. That blend is a different product, and its name does not tell you what it contains. The jar on this page holds bark ash only: no tobacco and no other plant material are declared. To compare it with ashes from other trees, open the Ashes category, where each jar carries its own botanical name.

Burning safely

Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

Precautions

  • Never leave anything burning unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
  • Smoke can irritate the airways: air the room, and avoid use if you have asthma or a respiratory illness.
  • Essential oils and floral waters: never swallow them and keep them away from the eyes; dilute oils before any contact with the skin, and seek advice during pregnancy.
  • Plant ash is not meant to be inhaled: handle it with care.

Storage

Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.
