About chaga, Inonotus obliquus

GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, lists Inonotus obliquus (Fr.) Pilát as the accepted name of chaga, in the family Hymenochaetaceae and the order Hymenochaetales. Former names recorded as synonyms include Polyporus obliquus and Phellinus obliquus. The Finnish name of the species is pakurikääpä; in German it is Schiefer Schillerporling and in French polypore oblique. A second photo on this page shows chaga growths on a birch trunk.

Other chaga extracts and forms

If you are looking for a labelled extract ratio, the Foodsporen chaga extract, 30 ml states 12:1 on its bottle. The chaga extract (Inonotus obliquus), 30 ml is a second smaller format. For the fungus itself, whole chaga from Finland is sold in dried pieces.

Functional mushrooms: what we know

Reishi, lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps and maitake have a long history in Asia and Eastern Europe, both in cooking and in traditional medicine. Modern research consists mainly of laboratory and animal studies: no health claims are authorised in the European Union for these mushrooms, and we do not make any.

Precautions

  • Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice if you take any medication, especially an anticoagulant or a diabetes medicine, and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Chaga is rich in oxalates: kidney damage has been reported after heavy, prolonged consumption.
  • Stick to the daily dose stated on the label, and keep out of the reach of children.
  • A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet.

Storage

Keep the product tightly closed, dry and away from light; for liquid extracts and tinctures, follow the instructions on the label.
