Smart Seeds & Herbs

A four-part kambo set from Peru

This set brings together the items that the supplier, Maya Herbs, sells as its kambo kit from Peru (reference 0937). The central piece is a flat bundle of thin wooden slats tied with green thread; the supplier states that it carries kambo, the skin secretion of the giant monkey frog. With it come two plain wooden sticks, a split piece of palo santo wood and a small bottle of dragon’s blood. The supplier names the Matsés of the Peruvian Amazon as the people it works with for the secretion. Mycotrop sells the set as one product.

Serious risks

Kambo is the secretion of the Amazonian tree frog Phyllomedusa bicolor. Applying it to burned skin has been linked to severe poisoning and several deaths: heart rhythm disorders, a drop in blood sodium caused by drinking too much water, and liver and kidney damage.

  • Never with heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy or a psychiatric condition, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or together with medicines.
  • We do not give any instructions for use for this product.

Traditional use and composition

Kambô (or kambo) is the name given to the skin secretion of an Amazonian tree frog, Phyllomedusa bicolor, called “sapo” among the Matsés of Peru. A 2022 review lists more than fifteen indigenous groups, from five language families, in Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guiana, Suriname and Venezuela: Yawanahua, Kaxinawá, Matsés, Mayoruna and Katukina, among others.

Ethnographic work describes purification and hunting rituals, notably to ward off “panema”, bad luck. This page gives the cultural context only; it contains no instructions for use.

Known compoundsBioactive skin peptides: dermorphins, deltorphins, dermaseptins, caeruleins, bradykinins, tachykinins, bombesins, among others.
Traditional usePeoples of the western Amazon (Matsés, Katukina, Yawanahua, Kaxinawá…): purification and hunting rituals, linked to the notion of panema (bad luck).
Where the use comes fromAmazon on both sides of the Brazil–Peru border; among the Matsés the dried secretion is called “sapo”.
State of researchMostly preclinical data (laboratory, animal), no randomised controlled trial. Serious poisonings and deaths are documented; ANVISA (Brazil) suspended advertising in 2004. No health claim is authorised in the EU.

The four items

The secretion stick is the bundle on the left of the main photo: narrow slats of brown wood laid side by side and bound with green thread. The two loose sticks are thin, straight lengths of grey-brown wood. The palo santo is a pale, split piece of Bursera graveolens (Burseraceae). The dropper bottle carries a red Maya label, “Dragon Blood – Tree Sap”, 5 ml, with Croton lechleri (Euphorbiaceae) as the listed ingredient; the shop also sells dragon’s blood sap from Peru on its own.

The frog behind the name

Phyllomedusa bicolor is a tree frog of the family Phyllomedusidae, known in English as the giant monkey frog and in Portuguese as rã-cambô. The shop also lists, as a separate product, a kambô practice stick of whole vine from Brazil, a plain piece of vine with no secretion.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
