Traditional use and composition

Voacanga africana is an African tree of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae). Preparations of the plant are used in West and Central African folk medicine (Mair et al. 2016).

Voacangine, an iboga-type alkaloid described as the plant’s main alkaloid (Mair et al. 2016), makes up about 0.8% of the root bark, alongside larger amounts of dimeric alkaloids such as voacamine (González et al. 2021). It blocks the cardiac hERG channel in vitro. Other indole alkaloids have been isolated from the bark.

Known compoundsMonoterpenoid indole alkaloids: voacangine, an iboga type (about 0.8% of the root bark), and iboga-vobasinyl dimers such as voacamine and voacamidine; other alkaloids isolated from the bark.
Traditional useFolk medicine of West and Central Africa; no source consulted details the peoples concerned.
State of researchMostly chemistry and laboratory tests; voacangine has been studied in vitro and in rats. No clinical data in the sources consulted. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

Good to know

  • Voacangine, an iboga-type alkaloid, blocks the cardiac hERG channel in vitro. A 2016 rat study found low oral bioavailability and judged the cardiac risk possibly negligible in healthy people but potentially serious with drug interactions or impaired health (Mair et al. 2016).

Botanical identity

Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Voacanga africana Stapf, published by Otto Stapf in 1894 in the Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany. Its synonyms include Voacanga angolensis, Voacanga glabra and Voacanga schweinfurthii. The recorded native range spans tropical Africa, from Senegal, Gambia and Guinea through Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and both Congos to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, with Angola in the south-west. GBIF gives the English name small-fruit wild frangipani and the French name voacanga d’Afrique.

Cut and appearance

The photos show small, curled shavings of bark, light brown with darker patches, heaped in a terracotta dish; the first also shows the pouch. The listing describes the cut as shredded, while the pouch label is printed Whole; the pieces in the photos are broken and curled rather than whole.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.

Mainly indole alkaloids: voacangine, an iboga type (about 0.8% of the root bark), and dimeric alkaloids such as voacamine (González et al. 2021). Voacangine blocks the cardiac hERG channel in vitro, which has prompted studies of its cardiac toxicity.

Which part of the plant is in the pouch?

Bark. The supplier lists bark as the plant part.

Why does the pouch say Whole?

The pouch label is printed Whole, while the listing and the supplier’s product title say shredded bark. The photos show broken, curled pieces.
