Moulded flowers on a bamboo kuripe
This kuripe is one of the decorated bamboo models in the rapé accessories at Mycotrop. Two bamboo tubes meet in a V: one is pale, with flat, angular faces, and the other is round and a deeper golden colour. Their joint sits in a brown binding covered with moulded flowers. The supplier describes the piece as handcrafted from bamboo, with flower designs moulded around the bamboo structure. There is one version, without a size or colour choice.

The flowers up close
In the product photo, a pink rose with layered petals sits at the centre of the binding, framed by green leaves with fine veins. Large orange petals curl around one side, a red petal shows underneath, and a cluster of small white blossoms sits near the tip. The supplier does not name the material of the flowers. Because each kuripe is handcrafted, the colours and the placement of the flowers differ slightly from piece to piece.
A snake motif or plain bamboo
For a different figure, the Coral Snake Kuripe carries a snake motif instead of flowers. If you prefer bare bamboo, the plain bamboo kuripe has no decoration at all. Every model is listed in rapé accessories.
Tepi and kuripe
A tepi is a long pipe: one person blows the rapé into another person’s nostril. A kuripe is a V-shaped applicator: one end goes to the mouth, the other to the nostril, and you blow yourself. Depending on the people, these pipes are made of bamboo, hollow bone or rolled leaves; wood, ceramic and stone are also common today (Faria 2016).
Care
Empty out any remaining powder after each use and let the applicator dry completely before putting it away.
Good to know
- Keep one applicator per person: studies of shared nasal straws found blood and hepatitis C virus on the tips (Aaron et al. 2008).
