Traditional use

Tagetes lucida, sold as Mexican tarragon, is a Mexican member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) with aniseed-scented foliage; its leaves are sometimes used as a substitute for tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), according to the University of Oxford Herbaria. In Mexico, healers and market herb sellers in Morelos State still use it in traditional medicine (Pérez-Ortega et al. 2016).

Its essential oil mainly contains methyl eugenol and estragole, in variable proportions (46% and 33% in a Mexican sample analysed in 2022). A coumarin, dimethylfraxetin, has been isolated from the aerial parts.

Known compoundsEssential oil: methyl eugenol and estragole (46% and 33% in one sample), linalool, geraniol (Torres-Martínez et al. 2022); coumarins including dimethylfraxetin (Pérez-Ortega et al. 2016).
Traditional useMexico: traditional medicine (healers and markets of Morelos); tarragon-like culinary herb.
State of researchLaboratory and animal studies (extracts, coumarins, essential oil); no human trial found. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this plant.

Good to know

  • Estragole and methyl eugenol, the two main compounds of the essential oil, are classed by the EMA’s HMPC as naturally occurring genotoxic carcinogens, on the basis of rodent studies.

The plant behind the tincture

Cavanilles described Tagetes lucida in 1795, and the Kew checklist (WCVP) accepts the name. Kew records it as native to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, and as introduced on Java. Besides Mexican tarragon and sweet mace, English sources call it Mexican mint marigold; in Spanish it is known as pericón or anisillo.

Related products

The same species is also available as a dried herb: shredded Mexican tarragon from Mexico. Another single-plant tincture in the range is the 30 ml hibiscus flower tincture from Ecuador.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mexican tarragon a true tarragon?

No. Despite the name Mexican tarragon, Tagetes lucida belongs to the genus Tagetes, whereas true tarragon is Artemisia dracunculus. Both are Asteraceae, but of different genera; the leaves of T. lucida are sometimes used as a substitute.

What does Tagetes lucida essential oil contain?

Mainly methyl eugenol and estragole (46% and 33% in a Mexican sample analysed in 2022), with some linalool and geraniol. The EMA classes these two main compounds as genotoxic carcinogens in rodents.

What does the label list as ingredients?

Tagetes lucida and alcohol 20 %, with the extract ratio 1:10.

Is this the same plant as the shredded Mexican tarragon?

Yes. Both products are Tagetes lucida from Mexico; one is a liquid extract, the other the dried, shredded herb.

Is there a larger bottle?

No. The tincture is listed in one size, 10 ml.
