Traditional use
Desmodium molliculum, called manayupa in Peru (Salazar-Campos et al. 2023), is a herbaceous plant of the legume family (Fabaceae), found from Mexico to Bolivia according to the Kew checklist. In Ecuador, traditional medicine uses it interchangeably with D. adscendens, both plants being known as ‘hierba del infante’, according to a 2025 study.
Scientific information on D. molliculum remains limited, unlike D. adscendens. Recent work has focused on its genetic identification and chemical characterisation.
| Known compounds | Vitexin (apigenin 8-C-glucoside), tannic acid and chlorogenic acid, identified by chromatographic fingerprinting (Peñaherrera et al. 2025). |

| Traditional use | Andean traditional medicine (Peru, Ecuador), sometimes interchangeably with D. adscendens under the name ‘hierba del infante’. |
| State of research | Limited information: DNA barcodes, an HPLC fingerprint and laboratory tests on extracts. No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU. |
The species
Kunth first described the plant as Hedysarum molliculum; de Candolle moved it to Desmodium in 1825. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants, compiled by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts Desmodium molliculum (Kunth) DC. in the legume family, Fabaceae, and lists Heteroloma lanatum, Desmodium mexicanum and Meibomia mollicula among its synonyms. Besides manayupa, plant name databases record the Spanish names amor seco and pata de perro.
Native range
The checklist records the species across Mexico, Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama) and northern and western South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
