Composition and current knowledge

Reishi (Japanese) or lingzhi (Chinese) is a polypore mushroom marketed under the name Ganoderma lucidum. In China its oldest written mention is in the Shennong bencao jing (25–220 CE), and it is described in the Bencao gangmu by Li Shizhen, under the Ming dynasty (Sadowska et al. 2026).

Taxonomy has moved on: according to a 2012 study, the lingzhi cultivated in East Asia is a species distinct from the European G. lucidum in the strict sense, described as G. lingzhi. A label name therefore does not always say which species the product contains.

Known compoundsTriterpenes (ganoderic acids), beta-glucan-type polysaccharides and sterols (Sadowska et al. 2026).
Traditional useMushroom of the traditional medicines of East Asia, described in early Chinese treatises (Shennong bencao jing, Bencao gangmu).
State of researchClinical trials exist, but a 2016 Cochrane review retained only five, with methodological limits. No health claim is authorised in the EU for this mushroom.

Good to know

  • A fatal case of fulminant hepatitis associated with a lingzhi powder was published in 2007 (Wanmuang et al. 2007); a causal link has not been demonstrated.

Ganoderma lucidum: names and classification

The GBIF taxonomic backbone gives Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P.Karst. as the accepted name and places it in the family Polyporaceae, order Polyporales. The species was first described as Boletus lucidus; Fomes lucidus is another name recorded as a synonym. Its English vernacular name is lacquered bracket. GBIF also lists the Chinese name 灵芝, the Japanese names 霊芝 and レイシ, the French ganoderme luisant and the German Glänzender Lackporling.

What the photos show

The first photo shows the kraft-paper stand-up pouch with its green and cream label beside a terracotta bowl of brown powder. A second photo shows reddish-brown powder in a wooden bowl next to glossy, lacquered fruiting bodies, and a third a single dried fruiting body with several reddish-brown caps on a short stalk. For reishi in liquid form, see the Foodsporen reishi extract, 30 ml; the 7 Mushrooms Mix combines reishi with six other species.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
