Reported effects and traditional use

Ginkgo biloba is the only living species of the Ginkgoaceae family, a tree native to China. According to the EMA assessment report, the earliest known mention of internal use of the leaf in Chinese medicine dates from 1505.

Published work mostly concerns standardised leaf extracts. Powdered leaf, dry extract and seed are different materials, with different compositions.

Known compoundsLeaf: flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin derivatives), terpene lactones (ginkgolides A, B, C, J and bilobalide) and alkylphenols such as ginkgolic acids. Ginkgotoxin occurs in the seeds and leaves.
Traditional useTraditional Chinese medicine: first mention of internal use of the leaf in 1505; the leaf appears in modern Chinese pharmacopoeias (EMA 2014).
State of researchStudies mostly concern standardised leaf extracts. The US NCCIH concludes there is no conclusive evidence of efficacy. No health claim is authorised for ginkgo in the EU.

Good to know

  • Ginkgo leaf may increase the risk of bleeding, particularly with anticoagulants or anti-inflammatory drugs (EMA 2014; NCCIH).
  • Fresh seeds are toxic. Ginkgotoxin, present in the seeds and leaves, has been associated with seizures in reported cases of poisoning (EMA 2014; NCCIH).

The plant: a family with a single species

Carl Linnaeus published the name Ginkgo biloba in 1771, in the second part of his Mantissa Plantarum. In the original text he gave Japan as its home and noted that the English gardener Gordon had supplied a living tree; a Gordon specimen in the Linnaean herbarium is the designated type of the name. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts one genus in the family Ginkgoaceae, Ginkgo, with one species, Ginkgo biloba. Names such as Salisburia adiantifolia, published by Smith in 1797, appear there as synonyms.

Native range and conservation status

WCVP records the species as native only to south-east China (the botanical region China Southeast). It lists it as introduced in other parts of China, in Japan and Korea, in Austria and Romania, and in Illinois in the United States. On the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Ginkgo biloba is assessed as Endangered.

Ginkgo in another format

If you are looking for the same plant in a different presentation, the shop also lists a dry extract of Chinese ginkgo leaf.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
