Traditional use

Botanical identity
Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) accepts Uncaria tomentosa (Willd. ex Schult.) DC., published by de Candolle in 1830 in the fourth volume of his Prodromus. The species was first described as Nauclea tomentosa. Its recorded native range lies in tropical America, from Guatemala, Belize and Honduras through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Trinidad, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern Brazil.
Cut and appearance
The photos show a loose heap of fibrous strands and flat chips in light and dark brown, some with paler inner wood, in a terracotta dish; the first photo also shows the kraft pouch, whose net-weight field is left blank. For the same vine milled to a fine powder, see the Brazilian cat’s claw vine powder.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
