Traditional use
Ligusticum porteri, osha, is a plant of the carrot family (Apiaceae) that grows in the Rocky Mountains, from Montana and Wyoming to Mexico, at roughly 2,900 to 3,500 metres.
According to the University of Kansas, Native American peoples and Hispanic communities of the south-western United States and Mexico have long used it; it remains important in Hispanic communities of New Mexico. The root and leaves are also used as a seasoning, with a pungent flavour reminiscent of celery and liquorice.
| Known compounds | Phthalides ((Z)- and (E)-3-butylidenephthalide) and carotol, isolated from a root extract (Ali et al. 2024). The genus Ligusticum mainly holds phthalides, alkaloids and phenolic acids (Donkor et al. 2016). |

Good to know
- In the wild, osha can be mistaken for hemlock, a poisonous plant, especially in fir and aspen forests. Telling them apart requires examining the seeds and roots (University of Kansas).
Botanical background
Coulter and Rose published Ligusticum porteri in 1888 in their revision of the North American Umbelliferae. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, accepts the name in the carrot family, Apiaceae, and lists Ligusticum brevilobum Rydb. as a synonym. Recorded English names include osha, Porter’s lovage and mountain lovage; in Spanish the plant is known as chuchupate.
Range in North America
The checklist gives a native range in the south-western United States (Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming) and in north-western and north-eastern Mexico. The Mexican origin stated by the supplier fits that range.
Whole roots
The roots are packed whole, neither cut nor powdered, so the pieces differ in length, thickness and shape. More roots, barks and herbs are listed in Smart Seeds & Herbs.
Shipping
We pack orders on business days in plain outer packaging with no description of what is inside. If the carrier offers tracking, you receive the link by email once the parcel has left. See Delivery, Tracking & Returns for delivery estimates and for the 14-day right of withdrawal and its exceptions.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
Before using a plant
- Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
