Important: a plant that contains DMT

Good to know

This species is known to contain DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) or related tryptamines. Combined with a plant that contains MAOIs, as in ayahuasca, it can cause serious interactions with many medicines and other substances.

  • Not suitable for anyone with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, for people with heart disease, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Never with antidepressants or other psychoactive substances.
  • We do not give any preparation method, extraction method or dosage for this plant.

Traditional use and composition

Mimosa tenuiflora, called jurema preta in Brazil and sold under the trade name Mimosa hostilis, is a shrub or small tree of the Fabaceae family, characteristic of the Caatinga, the semi-arid region of north-eastern Brazil.

It is regarded as sacred in Afro-Indigenous syncretic religions. The Jurema ritual, widespread among the Indigenous peoples of the North-East, gives it a central place, for example among the Kiriri according to a 2024 ethnographic study. A pioneer species, it also colonises degraded soils.

Known compoundsAlkaloids, including DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine), together with tannins, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and coumarins (de Oliveira et al. 2025).
Traditional useA sacred plant of the Jurema ritual among Indigenous peoples of north-eastern Brazil and in Afro-Indigenous syncretic religions.
State of researchWork is mostly phytochemical and preclinical (laboratory, animal). No health claim is authorised for this plant in the EU.

One plant, two names

The GBIF backbone and the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, give Mimosa tenuiflora as the accepted name, published in 1810. Mimosa hostilis is listed there as a synonym: George Bentham published it in 1875, so it is the later of the two names, and the botanical rule of priority favours the earlier one. Bentham’s name is still the usual trade name for the bark, which is why it appears in the product name and on the Herborist label.

Native range

According to the WCVP, the species is native from Mexico through Central America (El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama) to Colombia, Venezuela and north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil. It has been introduced to parts of South-East Asia, including Java, Sumatra and New Guinea. Its common names follow this range: jurema preta in Brazil, tepescohuite in Mexico.

The bark

A botanical study of the species in Mexico (Camargo-Ricalde, 2000) describes the species' stem bark as wrinkled, reddish-brown to grey and fibrous, with a high tannin content. That description refers to the bark of the stem, not to the root bark sold here. The product photos show irregular, reddish-brown pieces of root bark and a kraft-paper pouch with the Herborist label.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
