Traditional use
Tagetes lucida, sold as Mexican tarragon, is a Mexican member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) with aniseed-scented foliage; its leaves are sometimes used as a substitute for tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), according to the University of Oxford Herbaria. In Mexico, healers and market herb sellers in Morelos State still use it in traditional medicine (Pérez-Ortega et al. 2016).
Its essential oil mainly contains methyl eugenol and estragole, in variable proportions (46% and 33% in a Mexican sample analysed in 2022). A coumarin, dimethylfraxetin, has been isolated from the aerial parts.

- Estragole and methyl eugenol, the two main compounds of the essential oil, are classed by the EMA’s HMPC as naturally occurring genotoxic carcinogens, on the basis of rodent studies.
A marigold, not a tarragon
The name is borrowed. French tarragon is Artemisia dracunculus; Tagetes lucida belongs to the marigold genus Tagetes. Both sit in the daisy family, but in different genera. The name goes back to Cavanilles (1795) and is accepted in the Kew checklist (WCVP). Its native range covers Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
How the herb looks
The photos show thin, straight pieces of stem and leaf in olive green and brown, cut to a few centimetres. Shredded material is coarser than a fine cut and varies in length. The same species is also listed as a liquid extract: the Tagetes lucida tincture 1:10 from Mexico.
Storing your botanicals
