Blue lotus edition of Magic Ceremonial Cacao

Medicine Magic sells its Magic Ceremonial Cacao in several editions, each named after a partner plant on the front of the box. Here the partner is blue lotus. The supplier lists Theobroma cacao and Nymphaea caerulea as the botanical names, Colombia as the origin and seed as the plant part. Mycotrop stocks this edition in a 200 g and a 400 g box.

Reported effects and traditional use

This product combines cacao (Theobroma cacao) and blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea). Archaeological residues attest to the use of cacao in South America about 5,000 years ago, and several Mesoamerican civilisations used it ritually. The blue lotus is a water lily depicted on Egyptian papyri and tombs from the 14th century BCE.

For blue lotus, the literature describes a mild relaxation and, in some users, euphoria; it also reports agitation and confusion. These effects rest on anecdotal accounts and one case series, with no controlled human trial.

Known compoundsCacao: theobromine, caffeine. Blue lotus: flavonoids; aporphine-type alkaloids (nuciferine, apomorphine) are cited, but an authentic extract analysed in 2023 held only traces of nuciferine and no apomorphine.
Reported effectsBlue lotus: mild relaxation, euphoria in some; agitation, confusion or derealisation reported in clinical cases. Level of evidence: anecdotal accounts and case series.
Traditional useCacao: ritual drink of the Maya and Aztecs. Blue lotus: funerary and ritual iconography of ancient Egypt.
State of researchCacao: composition well known. Blue lotus: little data, mostly analytical, and no published safety data on the whole plant. No health claim is authorised in the EU for blue lotus.

Good to know

  • A case series of five people described agitation, confusion, derealisation and anxiety after blue lotus products; psychotic presentations have also been reported (2026 review).
  • The UK authority OPSS noted the lack of information on content, its variability and the purity of these products.

A note on the name Nymphaea caerulea

The supplier uses the long-established name Nymphaea caerulea. The World Checklist of Vascular Plants lists this name as a synonym: the accepted name is Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea, in the water-lily family (Nymphaeaceae). Both names refer to the same plant; the older one is kept here because it appears in the supplier data and in the product name.

Cacao and blue lotus in one box

Theobroma cacao belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae), and Colombia lies within its native range. The supplier does not state the share of blue lotus or which part of the plant is used, so neither appears on this page. The 200 g and 400 g boxes contain the same edition; only the weight changes. Other editions of the line pair the cacao with ashwagandha or red kratom.

Storing your botanicals

Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.

Before using a plant

  • Keep plants out of the reach of children and pets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, ask a doctor or pharmacist first: many plants interact with medicines.
  • Stop immediately if you have an allergic reaction or feel unwell.
  • The information on this page describes the product; it does not replace medical advice.
