Traditional use
Dragon’s blood (sangre de drago, sangre de grado) is the dark red latex of Croton lechleri, a tree of the western Amazon (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru). A 2003 review (Jones) lists many uses of this latex in South American folk medicine.
The latex contains proanthocyanidin oligomers and an alkaloid, taspine. A purified proanthocyanidin fraction, crofelemer, became a prescription drug in the United States; it is a pharmaceutical product distinct from the raw latex.
| Known compounds | Proanthocyanidin oligomers and the alkaloid taspine, in the tree’s dark red latex. |
|---|---|
| Traditional use | Many uses in South American folk medicine, reviewed by Jones (2003); detailed uses not repeated here. |
| State of research | Many laboratory studies; clinical data limited and centred on a purified fraction, not on the latex. No health claim is authorised for the latex in the EU. |
How spray drying works
According to the supplier, the sap is first made into a liquid extract. That extract is sprayed into a chamber of hot air, where it dries within moments into fine powder particles. The result is a dry material that differs in form from both the liquid sap and solid resin.
The species and its range
Kew’s World Checklist of Vascular Plants accepts Croton lechleri Müll.Arg., published in 1866, as a member of the spurge family. It records the native range as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Dragon’s blood as liquid sap
The sap itself is listed as Peruvian dragon’s blood tree sap, in volumes from 10 ml to 1 l.
Storing your botanicals
Keep dried plants in their tightly closed pouch or in an airtight jar, away from light, moisture and heat. Powders absorb moisture easily, so close them again straight away. For extracts, tinctures and capsules, follow the instructions on the label and the printed date.
