Rosewood (palo de rosa) essential oil in a 10 ml bottle

This essential oil is sold under the Maya Incense label, in a single 10 ml bottle of dark glass with a dropper. The label reads “Rosewood”, Aniba rosaeodora, “Essential Oil”, “10ml” and a “Made in Germany” seal. The product title speaks of “rosewood from Germany”: Germany is the country of manufacture given on the label, not the origin of the tree, which is native to northern South America. Mycotrop sells it strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

Rosewood, palo de rosa: one name, several trees

The label says “Rosewood” and names Aniba rosaeodora. “Rosewood” is a trade name that is also given to other, unrelated trees, such as the Dalbergia species; “palo de rosa” is the Spanish name and “pau-rosa” the Portuguese name of the tree named here.

Aniba rosaeodora is the spelling in common use in the trade. Plants of the World Online (POWO, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) accepts the corrected spelling Aniba rosodora Ducke, a species of the laurel family (Lauraceae): a tree of wet tropical habitats, native from northern South America to northern Peru (northern Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela).

A protected species

The species has been listed in CITES Appendix II since 2010 and is classed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, after intensive exploitation for the essential oil obtained from its wood. The label does not say which part of the tree is used, and the supplier publishes no information on the origin of the wood.

Bottle and label

The photo shows a 10 ml dark glass bottle with a black dropper cap. The purple label carries the Maya Incense logo, “Rosewood”, Aniba rosaeodora, “Essential Oil”, “10ml” and the “Made in Germany” seal. There is only one size. The shop’s other essential oils are grouped in the Essential Oils category.

Burning safely

Burn incense, resins, smudge sticks and palo santo in a well-ventilated room, on a heat-resistant holder (a dish, sand, or charcoal for resins), away from curtains and anything flammable. Always put out the embers before you leave the room.

Precautions

  • Never leave anything burning unattended, and keep children and pets at a distance.
  • Smoke can irritate the airways: air the room, and avoid use if you have asthma or a respiratory illness.
  • Essential oils and floral waters: never swallow them and keep them away from the eyes; dilute oils before any contact with the skin, and seek advice during pregnancy.
  • Plant ash is not meant to be inhaled: handle it with care.

Storage

Keep incense, resins and wood dry, in a closed container, away from light and heat, so that they keep their fragrance. Close oils and floral waters tightly after use.
