Peruvian Chakapa – Handmade Botanical Bundle, Pariana bicolor
A chakapa is a bundle of dried leaves tied together at the stems, so that it opens into a fan and rustles when shaken. This handmade piece comes from Peru and measures about 30–40 cm in length and width. It travels flat and dry; a light spray of water restores its shape.

A handmade leaf bundle from Peru
The chakapa is a fan of dried leaves gathered at the stems. When the bundle is moved, the leaves brush against each other and make a dry rattling sound. Our supplier lists this piece as handmade in Peru and gives its size as roughly 30–40 cm long and 30–40 cm wide. In the photo, broad pointed leaves fan out above a grip of stems wrapped in a woven band with orange and white stripes. Because every bundle is assembled by hand from natural leaves, the outline and density vary from piece to piece. Mycotrop sells it strictly as a collectible or souvenir item.

Which plant the leaves come from
The supplier’s product specification names Pariana bicolor, and the shop name follows it. The supplier’s own description, however, says that its chakapas are made from the leaves of Olyra latifolia, and adds that chakapas can be made from several different plants. Both names are accepted species of the grass family, Poaceae, in the GBIF backbone and in the World Checklist of Vascular Plants (WCVP) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. WCVP gives the range of Pariana bicolor as Peru to Bolivia and northern Brazil, while Olyra latifolia is recorded from Mexico to tropical America and in tropical Africa. The photo alone does not show which of the two was used.
Restoring the shape after delivery
To survive the journey, the bundle is dried and pressed flat, which leaves the leaves and stems brittle. The supplier recommends spraying it lightly with clean water from all sides and setting it aside for about a day. Once the leaves feel soft, a gentle shake separates them and the fan regains its volume. Handle the bundle carefully while it is still dry.
