How to choose your magic mushroom grow kit

A magic mushroom grow kit is a container of substrate already colonized by mycelium: you place it in its bag, and the mushrooms appear within one to three weeks. It all comes down to two choices: the species, then the strain.

For a first grow, choose a Fresh Mushrooms Psilocybe cubensis kit: simple setup, no water at the start, and a stated yield of about 500 g of fresh mushrooms in total. Mycotek’s Panaeolus cyanescens kits are for growers who have already mastered warmth, humidity and fresh air.

Cubensis or Panaeolus: what’s the difference?

Psilocybe cubensis (Fresh Mushrooms)

The most widely grown psilocybin mushroom in the world. A 1200 ml kit with no water at the start, 18–28 °C, and a stated yield of about 500 g fresh over several flushes. Common reference point: 15–30 g fresh (1.5–3 g dried), about 7 g fresh for a first time.

Panaeolus cyanescens (Mycotek)

The “Pan Cyan” or “Copelandia”: small, slender mushrooms, but far more concentrated gram for gram. An advanced grow with a casing layer, 23–28 °C depending on the strain, and 2–4 flushes of about 30–100 g fresh in total. Cut amounts at least in half.

How a Fresh Mushrooms kit works

  1. Open the kit without adding water and keep the lid for later.
  2. Slide the open container into the microfilter grow bag, with the microperforations above the substrate.
  3. Wait 7–14 days in bright, indirect light (no direct sun), at around 23 °C, without opening or misting.
  4. Stand the bag upright and close it with the clips as soon as the first pins appear.
  5. Harvest before the spores drop, then rehydrate the container for 12 hours in the cold for the next flush.

Effects and dosage: the essentials

Psilocybin mushrooms intensify perception: colors, shapes, sounds, emotions and the sense of time all change. The effects come on within 20–60 minutes, the experience lasts 3–6 hours, and nausea is common at the start (Trimbos-instituut, Jellinek). Each product page details its strain’s profile and dosage guidelines.

Key reference points

Cubensis: about 7 g fresh for a first time, 15–30 g fresh (1.5–3 g dried) for common use, according to Unity (Jellinek / Arkin). Pan Cyan: at least half as much. Always start low and wait at least an hour before considering more: potency can vary up to fourfold from one flush to the next.

Reducing the risks

  • Never with lithium or an MAOI antidepressant; with any other medication, ask a doctor first.
  • Not if you have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder.
  • No alcohol or other drugs at the same time; a calm place and a sober person with you.
  • Don’t drive for the rest of the day. If someone feels unwell, call emergency services (112 in the EU).

A little history

Psilocybe cubensis was described in 1906 by F. S. Earle from Cuban specimens, hence its name, and moved to the genus Psilocybe by Rolf Singer in 1949. It was long thought to have reached the Americas with cattle; a 2026 genetic study instead places its closest wild relative in sub-Saharan Africa, with a split dating back about 1.5 million years.

Strain names (Golden Teacher, B+, Thai…) are growers' names with no botanical standing. Genetic studies show that many strains are very closely related, and that the same name can cover different cultures depending on the vendor. The story of each strain, from documented fact to legend, is told on its product page.
